Chords Used In Basic Blues
The chords used in the basic blues progression are based on note numbers found in the major scale. They are 7th chords built on the 1st, 4th & 5th notes of the scale. In other words, if you want to play the blues progression in the key of A, you would use the A7, D7 and E7 chords. The Blues Progression
The blues is based on a 12-bar chord progression that in it's basic form uses the I7, IV7 and V7 chords. The basic progression is 4 bars of the I7 chord, 2 bars of the IV7 chord, 2 bars of V7, 1 bar of I7 and 1 bar of V7.

The last measure is known as the "turn-around." The "turn-around" sets you up to go back and repeat the chord progression. You do this as many times as you need to finish the song.
