The chords used in the basic blues progression are based on note numbers found in the major scale. They are 7th chords built on the 1st, 4th & 5th notes of the scale. The blues is based on a 12-bar chord progression that in it's basic form uses the I7, IV7 and V7 chords. The basic progression is 4 bars of the I7 chord, 2 bars of the IV7 chord, 2 bars of V7, 1 bar of I7 and 1 bar of V7. The last measure is known as the "turn-around." The "turn-around" sets you up to go back and repeat the chord progression. You do this as many times as you need to finish the song.
